Welcome to Lynchburg Apple Core!

Lynchburg Apple Core, the Lynchburg Mac User Group welcomes you to its web site. The group meets monthly to share ideas and developments relating to the Apple Macintosh operating system, hardware and software.Through thick and thin, this group has never waivered in its support of what we think is the best computer system available.

March Meeting
Thursday March 20

New Location - CVCC Mac Lab, Campbell Hall)

Holt Messerly will review iPhoto '08 photo management capabilities.

See sidebar for important parking info

Note: The website is undergoing a major redesign so please bear with me during this process - I am only updating critical information on the current site. I think you will like the new site; I'm learning a new program to do this (more on that later) so it takes a little time but we should have at least a basic new site up in a couple of months.

Brand new website redesign for MacWorld:

Check it out at: http://www.macworld.com

You will also find a handy guide to Leopard, full of tips and tricks to make your dance with the big cat a breeze:

Recent meeting covered Apple's Mac User Group online store.

Bet you didn’t know there was such a thing. Well, there is, and from time to time (almost, but not quite monthly), we get an email newsletter from the Apple User Groups liaison folks with new passwords and deals just for members of Mac User Groups. They forbid us to publish most of that stuff in OUR newsletter, but we thought it was about time to have a
program on/about it, so here it is, just in time to beat the summer doldrums.

Deals are to be had this month on things as diverse as headphones, iPod protectors, utility software, monitor & printer dust covers, and much more.

At the meeting we used the college’s broadband to go to the MUG store and checked it out, as well as having a peek at some of the canned presentations and product reviews offered for program and newsletter use In addition, we had the usual question and answer session, along with a chance to meet and greet fellow Mac users.

Is your QuickTime up to date?

ProTips

Need the First Available Printer?

If you’ve got a print job on your hands and you need it as soon as possible, but all the printers on your network are often busy, you can pool these printers together so your document will automatically print to the first available printer.

Finding Where the © and ™ Symbols Live

Since nearly the beginning of Mac-dom, when you wanted to find out which key combination produced a font’s special characters (stuff like ©, ™, £, ¢, ‰, ƒ, etc.), you used a utility called KeyCaps. More than a decade later, KeyCaps is still a part of Mac OS, but a better way to access these special characters is through the Character Palette.

Super-Fast Way to Email a URL

If you run across a cool website and want to email that site to a friend, probably the fastest way is to press Command-Shift-I. This opens Mail, and inserts the Web URL into the body of your email. Now all you have to do is type the recipient’s name, enter “Check this site out” in the Subject line, and click Send.

Instant Slide Shows Wherever You Are
Let’s say you open a window and there are 20 photos in that window. Want to see a quick slide show of those photos? Just press Command-A to select all the photos, then Control-click on any photo and from the contextual menu that appears, choose slideshow. A full-screen slide show of those photos (complete with a nice smooth dissolve transition) will appear onscreen.

From Scott Kelby’s “Mac OS X Tiger Killer Tips,” packed with cool inside secrets, slick workarounds, undocumented shortcuts, and sneaky tricks to help you use Mac OS X.

Look for a new Scott Kelby Mac OS X tip every Wednesday on the Apple Pro site.

Meeting Schedule

Regular Monthly
Meetings

We’re returning to Central
Virginia Community College! This
month we’ll meet in the Mac com-
puter graphics lab. This is the same
room we used to meet in, for those
who remember those days.
Parking: note that this is
important
: you must park in the
student parking lot at the bottom of
the hill and walk up the hill through
or around the front building to
Campbell Hall. DO NOT PARK in
the lot closest to Campbell
Hall, or for that matter in
any other parking lot,
including Visitors. YOU
WILL GET A TICKET
otherwise. Special
arrangements for handicap
use of the lot beside Campbell
Hall can be made through the
CVCC police. For this purpose
you can park in the Visitors lot
right in front of the main building
where the police office is located.
However, there is a 30 minute time
limit in this parking lot.

‘Net Access
Folks wishing to download
software from the internet can do so
by bringing a laptop and plugging
into the wired ethernet network.
Although there is a wireless net-
work in place, no wireless access is
possible for us for a number of
reasons. Please note also that al-
though you can surf the net from
the lab computers, you cannot
download anything to them.

It’s a great time
to be alive
and be
a Mac user!
